In KILLING THE SS: The Hunt for the Worst War Criminals in History (Henry Holt & Co.; Oct. 9, 2018; $30; 304 pages with maps and photographs) once again Bill O'Reilly and Martin Dugard bring readers into the annals of the World War II era to the global manhunt for the most notorious Nazis in Adolf Hitler's inner circle. After the fall of the Third Reich, combined British, Israeli and American intelligence forces worked ceaselessly to apprehend Adolf Eichmann, Josef Mengele, Martin Bormann, Klaus Barbie and Elfriede Huth, among others - the top operatives for Hilter's chilling Final Solution. In the hallmark style of the prior seven books in this national, #1 best-selling series, KILLING THE SS brings the reader on the epic and brave search hunting down Hitler's worst henchmen and women - the very people who deployed the Fuhrer's plans - as they fled for their lives hiding in South America, frequently in plain sight and working menial jobs to throw off pursuers, but usually with the luxury they didn't afford their victims, with their families. The book reunites fans of the series with an in-depth look at this particular facet of WWII - bringing the Nazis to trial and execution for their war crimes.
With a pace like that of a spy thriller, KILLING THE SS follows members of the Mossad, MI6, and the CIA, as they piece together tips to flush out the Nazis on the lam. Isser Harel, Benny Ferencz, Eli Rosenbaum, Simon Wiesenthal and even the future prime minister Yitzhak Shamir are among those who played major roles in history's darkest chapter setting traps and creating extraordinary plans to capture the Reich's masterminds. The book ends with a startling, unexpected development when unlikely partners hunt down the notorious Nazi rocket scientist, Heinz Krug.

Last In Line was formed in 2011, when Vinny Appice, Jimmy Bain, and Vivian Campbell, (Ronnie James Dio’s co-conspirators and co-writers on the “Holy Diver”, “Last In Line” – the album from which they took their name, and “Sacred Heart” albums) teamed up with esteemed vocalist Andrew Freeman. The debut album “Heavy Crown” was released in February 2016, landing at #1 on the Billboard Heat-Seekers Chart. Initially, the release had been preceded by tragedy when bassist Jimmy Bain unexpectedly passed away at the age of 68 on January 23, 2016. Last In Line, honoring what they knew would be Bain’s wish to keep the band moving, brought in renowned bassist Phil Soussan (ex-Ozzy Osbourne) and committed to sustained touring in support of the album, hitting festivals, headlining clubs, and sharing the stage with metal luminaries such as Saxon and Megadeth.
In late 2017, the band gathered in L.A. to start the recording of the second album, which was produced by the band members and Jeff Pilson (Foreigner, The End: machine, ex-Dokken), who also produced the debut album. Having really gelled as a band while touring in support of the debut album, the songwriting came readily to the members. They’ve created a record that shows a big progression in sound, while immediately being recognizable as Last In Line thanks to Vinny Appice’s rhythms, thunderous bass from Soussan, amazing vocals from Andrew Freeman, and the roaring guitars of Vivian Campbell.
“The musical style of ‘II’ is different from ‘Heavy Crown’, but it wasn’t something that we planned to do,” explains Vivian Campbell. “Phil is a more intricate player than Jimmy was and that, together with the natural growth and development of the band led us to the songs on the album. As always, we simply started to jam on ideas and see where they led us. But it’s fair to say that the songs on this album sound more developed, with more parts and more experimentation than the songs on ‘Heavy Crown’. The first album set a tone, but on ‘II’ we developed that idea and took it to the next logical stage.”
Drummer Vinny Appice, on the sound of the new record and song writing process, says “I always sound like me. Viv and I have been playing together for years and have the same feel and pulse and attitude. Now with Phil on bass, he allows a more melodic approach on the bass parts making the songs even more interesting. He fits in perfectly being from the same musical family and time as me and Viv. Mr. Freeman sings from his soul and completes the band’s sound with his melodies and amazing range.”
He continues, “the songwriting process was the same as DIO’s ‘Holy Diver’. First, we have fun writing together. We get in a room and jam on riffs and chords until we hit on something good, then continue to build it into a song. Andy puts his magic on it and it all works out very well.”
Asked about first single ‘Landslide’, Vocalist Andrew Freeman says, “’Landslide’ was the first song we wrote for this record. It was really easy to write as all of the parts fell into place quickly. The title ‘Landslide’ is a metaphor relating to the day to day struggles that we all go through as people. Trying to keep on course when dealing with adversity, manipulation through media and leadership. It’s meant to inspire strength and resolve.
Phil Soussan says about how it was joining Last In Line and the development of the songs, “[i]t was refreshing to be able to write songs in such an organic fashion – by jamming and developing ideas as a group, without bringing in preconceived songs – something I haven’t done for ages. The result was a true collaboration, a concept that is so rare these days! Vinny has a unique style of drumming that, beyond keeping beats, inspires riffs and arrangements and Vivian has a way of playing that has a conviction to every note. He is able to turn every riff into a signature. Andrew was creative and unrestricted, focusing his contemporary influences into vocal stylings and hooks that are outside the classic rock clichés. He is very much a perfectionist. Beyond trying to remain true to Jimmy’s playing and to the heritage of the relationship between Viv and Vinny, everyone was completely open to exploring any possible idea. I am honestly prouder of our efforts on this album than anything in which I have been involved in for a very long time.

For the millions of people in their fifties and sixties who find themselves out of work, unable to find a job, and financially incapable of retiring, 55, UNDEREMPLOYED, AND FAKING NORMAL (Simon & Schuster; On sale January 8, 2019) is a practical plan for getting past any blame or shame, overcoming denial, and finding a path to a new normal.
Elizabeth White was inspired to write this book by her personal struggle. White has an impressive resume, including advanced degrees from Harvard and Johns Hopkins and a distinguished employment history. She started a business that failed and then tried to re-enter the work force in her mid-fifties, only to find that there is little demand for workers her age, even those with an outstanding resume. But she then discovered that her financial and employment hardship was not an isolated case. 55, UNDEREMPLOYED, AND FAKING NORMAL is an empowering guide for Baby Boomers in need of constructive advice to help get back on their feet, filled with emotional testimony and eye-opening facts and figures. As important as its practical advice is the book’s emotional support. With hard data and a comforting shoulder, White offers insightful pathways that she followed for personal and financial survival. The future, as she explains, can be better than you think with an unvarnished understanding of how to rebuild your sense of self and a new supportive community.
White is a charismatic speaker who travels to advocate on this subject. She has appeared on PBS NewsHour and her TED talk has received over 1 million views. Originally self-published, Simon & Schuster is relaunching White’s highly necessary book – updated with new information and stories – to bring White’s valuable advice to a larger public.

Broadcast by the BBC between 1969 and 1974, Monty Python’s Flying Circus introduced something completely different: a new brand of surrealistic, stream-of-consciousness comedy that pushed the traditional boundaries of format, style, and content.
In MONTY PYTHON SPEAKS (Dey Street Books), David Morgan offers a thorough oral history of the Pythons before and after their massive success.
Blending brilliant satire with slapstick silliness, The Pythons—Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin—spoke to a generation eager to break free of the conventional. Making their way across the Atlantic and the world, the Pythons’ zany approach to comedy would have a monumental influence on modern popular culture, paving the way for farcical entertainment from Saturday Night Live to The Simpsons to Austin Powers.
David Morgan has collected interviews with Monty Python’s founding members, actors, producers, and other collaborators to produce a no-holds-barred look at the Pythons’ legendary sketches and films, including Monty Python’s Life of Brian, Monty Python and the Holy Grail (the inspiration for the hit Broadway musical Spamalot), and The Meaning of Life.
THE REVISED & UPDATED EDITION OF MONTY PYTHON SPEAKS WILL INCLUDE:
• A new foreword by LAST WEEK TONIGHT’S JOHN OLIVER
• Four new chapters on Monty Python in the 21st century
• The story behind the making of Spamalot: The Musical
• The groups’ reactions to the wild success of their 2014 reunion show at London’s O2
• Exiting The Stage: A touching look at the group sans Terry Jones (who was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia in 2015)
• Corrections to the text & index

That is why so many dogs end up in Animal Shelters, because their owners don’t train them.
Last week, Burt was on “The Ellen Show”, and she showed how for the past 23 years, Burt and his wife Tracy have saved the lives of 15,000 dogs at their GENTLE GIANTS RESCUE in Norco CA.,www.gentlegiantsdogfood.com.

Each year, millions of Americans seek alternative forms of treatment for chronic health problems. Indeed, many of us know someone who has had a seemingly miraculous cure from an alternative form of medicine. Yet even those who have experienced such relief often can’t explain it. In THE MAGIC FEATHER EFFECT: The Science of Alternative Medicine and the Surprising Power of Belief (Scribner; January 22, 2019), Melanie Warner, a former New York Times reporter and the acclaimed author of Pandora’s Lunchbox, brings both a critical eye and an open mind to her quest to understand some of the world's most popular alternative health treatments, the people who seek them, and the reasons so many of them feel cured.

Since 1997, dozens of college-aged men have mysteriously drowned after a night out drinking with friends. Their bodies have been found in clusters around the country, and the victims are eerily similar – they’re all athletic, academic achievers. In addition, near the bodies is one distinct mark: graffiti of a smiley face. Oxygen Media’s new series “Smiley Face Killers: The Hunt for Justice” follows retired NYPD Detective Kevin Gannon and his team of investigators as they seek to prove that the drownings aren’t accidents, but homicides; and they may all be victims of a calculated group known as The Smiley Face Killers.
Kevin Gannon is a 20-year veteran of the New York City Police Department. During his distinguished career as Sergeant in the Detective Bureau, Gannon made over 1000 felony apprehensions and was awarded almost 100 medals for bravery. When he retired, he was one of the most highly decorated officers in NYPD history. Gannon’s involvement in the Smiley Face Killers cases began with his commitment to solve the Patrick McNeil case, the first unexplained drowning case he worked. The case still haunts Gannon, and it’s what drove him to come out of retirement and commit his life to proving these deaths are, in fact, murders.

Altitudes & Attitude, a collaboration between Anthrax’s Frank Bello and Megadeth’s David Ellefson—two virtuosic bass players who’ve anchored some of the fiercest thrash records of all time – are sharing a new video for the song “Late” from their debut album, Get It Out (January 18 / Megaforce), featuring a guitar solo by the great Ace Frehley.
“David and I had a blast filming “Late” at our friend Chris Santos’ restaurant, Beauty and Essex in New York City,” says Bello. A kind of rock ‘n’ roll primal-scream therapy, Get It Out is the result of Bello and Ellefson’s nearly four years of writing and recording sessions—and decades of touring, searching, striving and living. “I think you see a different side of both of us.”
“The song has an easy feel to it, so we shot the video with that same spirit,” adds Ellefson. “The music is haunting with a memorable hook and Frank’s personal storyline. These songs are fun and inspiring to perform.”
The band confirmed appearances in Bello’s New York hometown, including an inaugural US show on Saturday, January 19 at Saint Vitus in Brooklyn. Additional NYC appearances include a Q&A and performance January 17 as part of the Guitar World Backstory series at the Cutting Room, an in-store signing January 18 at Rough Trade. Los Angeles events include a Q&A on January 22 with Loudwire at the Musicians Institute, and appearances at NAMM on January 25, before the band heads to Europe in February.

Before rock 'n' roll, the guitar was a little noticed instrument, barely loud enough for audiences to hear. Even early amplifiers that were invented to fix the problem dulled the senses with scratchy feedback. Enter the tinkerers, obsessives, and technical wizards. If Bill Gates and Steve Jobs birthed the age of the personal computer, then Leo Fender and Les Paul helped usher in the age of rock 'n' roll. In Ian S. Port's rollicking The Birth of Loud: Leo Fender, Les Paul, and the Guitar-Pioneering Rivalry That Shaped Rock 'n' Roll(Scribner, on-sale: January 15, 2019; $28.00/hardcover), Port recounts the quintessentially American entrepreneurial story of how Fender, a southern California radio repairman, and Paul, one of America's most popular guitarists and relentless innovators, transformed what was once a background instrument into the power tool that altered the course of popular music.
At the close of World War II, southern California was fertile ground for the coming change. Hollywood's Les Paul was seeing his reputation grow, and his open garage recording sessions attracted players and inventors like Fender who were curious about how Paul obtained his edge. Tracking across decades these two fathers of the electric rock sound, The Birth of Loud captures Paul as one of the guitar's first ambassadors, popularizing the instrument, and Fender as its first mass producer, driven to make guitars widely and inexpensively available to the masses.
Readers meet a young California guitarist named Dick Dale who fried some 40-50 amplifiers in his quest to perfect his Fender Stratocaster's machine gun-like "surf guitar" sound. In an ironic twist, Dale would cause deafness in one of Leo Fender's ears in a freak accident at Fender's laboratory. And Fender was all about the bass, too. Readers follow legendary L.A. session bass player Carol Kaye who, with Fender's new Precision Bass on her lap, introduced the driving bass lines that sent Beach Boys classics and many other 1960s and 1970s hits to the top of the charts. Most remarkably, The Birth of Loud dazzlingly spotlights the way that rock gods such as Muddy Waters, Buddy Holly, Eric Clapton, and Jimi Hendrix took up Fender and Paul's successive innovations and introduced a sound that was, by turns, hallucinatory, ecstatic, and unforgettable. By the time Fender and Paul finished putting their stamp on American music, the world could hear that this loud new form of expression was here to stay.
The Birth of Loud captures the fascinating confluence of 20TH century American entrepreneurship, craftsmanship, performance, and music, produced by Leo Fender's and Les Paul's competitive drive to create the perfect electric guitar. Their creations would transform culture. Their story is The Birth of Loud.

The drama with the Duncan family is heating up this January! In the winter premiere of Carl Weber's The Family Business, ‘LC Duncan’ (Ernie Hudson) hands over power to son, ‘Orlando Duncan’ (Darren DeWitt Henson), making him the family’s new CEO. Orlando develops a new product that could substantially increase profits for the business, but this operation is carried out at the displeasure of the family matriarch, ‘Chippy’ Duncan (Valarie Pettiford).
More money comes with more problems, and Orlando’s highly lucrative venture makes the family a target, putting old foes, The Zuniga’s (Emilio Rivera and Yadi Valerio Rivera), and new rivals (played by Malik Yoba, WWE's Mark Henry) on the offensive against the Duncan family. Can they evade a war with these rival factions or will the onslaught tear them apart?
‘London’ (Tami Roman) also finds herself in a jam when she finds out she’s pregnant, but isn’t certain who the father is.
See how these and other stories unfold on Carl Weber's The Family Business, every Tuesday, at 9/8c on BET.

Her supportive parents agreed to homeschooling Dallas so she could pursue her dream. Losing her friends and school life was difficult, but she quickly built a following. After a few networking trips to L.A. and a brief pass at pop music, Dallas knew her heart and voice belonged to country. Lin Shaye

Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Lin Shaye loved "storytelling" so much, even as a child and knew that she was destined to act. She performed in plays at the University of Michigan where she was an art history major, but missing the theater so much, was accepted into Columbia University's Master of Fine Arts program in acting, from which she graduated. While in NY she also studied with Uta Hagan, Stella Adler, and Lee Strasberg. After graduation, she worked with the best and brightest in New York theater, including the infamous Joseph Papp. Some of the highlights include "Tartuffe" at the New York Shakespeare Festival, and "The Taking ofMiss Janie" at Lincoln Center (which won the NY Drama Critics Award).Shaye made her film debut in New York in "Hester Street" where she portrayed a Polish prostitute, to her mother's chagrin.
Shortly thereafter, she flew to Los Angeles after hearing that Jack Nicholson was interested in meeting her for the role. She was cast in his film "Goin' South." Upon her move to Los Angeles, her love of theater inspired her and twelve other actors to put together a theater company called the Los Angeles Theater Unit which lasted for a decade and earned many awards. Her most memorable performance was in the original play "Be Per Days" which earned her a Drama‐Logue Award for Best Actress. Lin has become undoubtedly one of the industry's greatest chameleons. The Farrelly Brothers cast her in a series of memorable characters beginning with their 1994 hit comedy "Dumb and Dumber", on to the infamous landlady in "Kingpin" opposite Woody Harrelson, and then as 'Magda,' the sun‐withered neighbor of Cameron Diaz in their hit "There's Something About Mary." Shaye was also unforgettable as the KISS‐hating mom in "Detroit Rock City" and as Sonia, the tough German/Swedish coach in "Boat Trip". In a dramatic change of pace, she received critical acclaim in "The Hillside Strangler" as the alcoholic mother.
The horror genre also found Lin, starting with a cult favorite, "Critters" and then onto Wes Craven's "Nightmare on Elm Street" which paved the way for more in the genre. She worked on a trio of movies with director Tim Sullivan:, "2001 Maniacs," starring opposite Robert Englund, its sequel, "2001 Maniacs: Field of Screams" and Sullivan's "Chillerama." Shaye also starred in the thriller "Snakes on a Plane" opposite Samuel L. Jackson, and the independent films "The Signal" starring Lawrence Fishburn, "Jack Goes Home," "Abattoir," "Buster's Mal Heart," and "The Midnight Man."
In 2010 she found herself in the blockbuster hit "Insidious" with director James Wan, which led to "Insidious Chapter 2," "Insidious: Chapter 3," and "Insidious: The Last Key" in which she now had become according to James Wan: "the name of the franchise." Upcoming film releases include "Room for Rent" which she also serves as co‐producer, "Anderson Falls," "Get Gone" and the highly anticipated horror film "The Grudge" reimagining written and directed by Nicolas Pesce.
Shaye has a solid resume in television as well with guest appearances most recently on "American Gothic" and "Still the King".She resides in Los Angeles and is a lifetime member of the Actor's Studio.

Iraq war veteran Peter Ash is restless in the home he shares with June Cassidy in Washington State. June knows Peter needs to be on the move, so she sends him to Memphis to help her friend Wanda Wyatt, a photographer and war correspondent who’s been receiving peculiar threats. When Peter arrives in Memphis, however, he finds the situation has gone downhill fast–someone has just driven a dump truck into Wanda’s living room. But neither Wanda nor Peter can figure out why.
At the same time, a young homeless street musician finds himself roped into a plan to rob a jewelry store. The heist doesn’t go as planned, and the young man finds himself holding a sack full of Rolexes and running for his life. When his getaway car breaks down, he steals a new one at gunpoint–Peter’s 1968 green Chevrolet pickup truck.
Peter likes the skinny kid’s smarts and attitude, but he soon discovers that the desperate musician is in far worse trouble than he knows. And Wanda’s troubles are only beginning. Peter finds himself stuck between Memphis gangsters–looking for Rolexes and revenge–and a Mississippi ex-con and his hog-butcher brother looking for a valuable piece of family history that goes all the way back to the Civil War.

R.L. Stine
<a class="spreaker-player" href="https://www.spreaker.com/episode/16680165" data-resource="episode_id=16680165" data-width="100%" data-height="350px" data-theme="dark" data-playlist="show" data-playlist-continuous="true" data-autoplay="false" data-live-autoplay="false" data-chapters-image="true" data-episode-image-position="right" data-hide-logo="true" data-hide-likes="false" data-hide-comments="false" data-hide-sharing="false" >Listen to "R.L. Stine Creator Of Goosebumps" on Spreaker.</a><script async src="https://widget.spreaker.com/widgets.js"></script>
Born in 1943, R.L. Stine started out writing jokes and funny stories. He moved to New York City in the mid-1960s, after graduating from The Ohio State University. In 1986, Stine published Blind Date, his first horror novel for young adults. He launched his popular Fear Street book series three years later. Beginning in 1992, Stine found international acclaim writing the Goosebumps series, which spurred the creation of additional series and nearly 200 books.
He was born Robert Lawrence Stine in Columbus, Ohio, on October 8, 1943. Stine began writing stories at the age of 9, using an old typewriter that he found. He initially made up jokes and humorous stories, not the spine-tingling tales that later made him famous.
Stine's father worked as a shipping clerk in a warehouse, and his mother stayed home to look after young Robert and his two siblings. Stine has described himself as "a very fearful child," and said that his mother gave him one of his first serious frights by reading Pinocchio. "The original Pinocchio is terrifying ... He goes to sleep with his feet on the stove and burns his feet off!" Stine said of the classic tale, according to the HarperCollins website.
At The Ohio State University, Stine remained focused on the lighter side of life. He edited the school's humor magazine, The Sundial, for several years. After graduating in the mid-1960s, he moved to New York City.
In New York, Stine worked as a writer and editor. He eventually landed a position at Scholastic, Inc., working on children's magazines. He created a humor magazine for kids, Bananas, in the mid-1970s, and later launched Maniac magazine for the company. Outside of his day job, Stine wrote humorous books for kids under the name "Jovial Bob Stine."
After losing his job at Scholastic during a company reorganization, Stine began writing full-time. He branched out into the horror genre, beginning his first scary tale with only the title-Blind Date. The book received a warm welcome when it was released in 1986, as did Twisted and The Baby-Sitter, released in 1987 and 1989, respectively.
Stine launched his first horror book series for young adults, Fear Street, in 1989. Described as "where your worst nightmares lives," the series explored the dark misadventures of students at Shadyside High School. Fear Street grew to include roughly 100 novels, eventually selling more than 80 million copies.
In 1992, Stine started taking younger readers on their own thrill ride with the Goosebumps series. These books, which he produced through his wife Jane's Parachute Press book-packaging company, targeted the tween market. The first title, Welcome to Dead House, was quickly followed by more novels. At one point, Stine was writing one or two books each month. Each title featured the trademark elements of the series: Page-turning plots and daring cliffhangers at the end of each chapter.
Goosebumps soon became a literary phenomenon. The books became bestsellers in the United States and abroad, and were eventually translated into 16 different languages. Goosebumps was turned into a television series as well. The tremendous popularity of the series turned Stine into one of the most successful children's writers of all time, drawing comparisons between Stine and adult horror writer Stephen King.
As the 1990s came to a close, Goosebumps fever began to fade. Stine launched a new series in 2000, Nightmare Room, with each title featuring an online component. In 2004, he mixed humor and horror in Who Let the Ghosts Out?, the first book in the Mostly Ghostly series.

In 1776, an elite group of soldiers were handpicked to serve as George Washington’s bodyguards. They were called the “Life Guards.” Washington trusted them; relied on them. But unbeknownst to Washington, some of them were part of a treasonous plan. In the months leading up to the Revolutionary War, these traitorous soldiers, along with the governor of New York and mayor of New York City, launched a deadly plot against the most important member of the military: George Washington himself. This is the story of the secret plot and how it was revealed. It is a story of leaders, liars, counterfeiters, and jailhouse confessors. It also shows just how hard the battle was for George Washington and how close America came to losing the Revolutionary War. When Washington discovered the plot, he arrested the guilty parties, gathered together 20,000 troops and citizens in an open field, and hanged one of the conspirators for all to see. It was the largest public execution of its time in all of North America. The arrest and execution happened days before the signing of the Declaration of Independence. So why do so few people know the story? At the time, Washington and other top officials kept much of what happened secret. Other details were obscured by the swirl of rumors and the fog of war. But now, this gripping story from history can be fully told.
