Without any real reason of explanation the childhood story Hansel And Gretel has returned to our chapters with her name first.  Was it to catch us off guard?  To create some sort of diversion in the way of saying, "You aren't taking your little ones to this one."   The only true film opening this weekend was viewed by Ryan.  He takes us deep into the dark story reaching areas and reminders of why this kids book was a family favorite and yet in its own way it's extremely haunting to think of mean old witch fattening up Hansel to eat him.

In January of 1989 the director of Oregon's Department of Corrections, Michael Francke, was brutally stabbed to death outside his office in Salem. His murder was quickly ruled a "car burglary gone wrong" and pinned on a low-level drug dealer named Frank Gable, a man who Francke's own brother, Kevin, along with storied Oregon reporter Phil Stanford, believe has been wrongfully imprisoned for nearly 30 years. They contend Francke had uncovered a dangerous trail of corruption in the prison system- one that lead to the top of Oregon's political establishment. Murder In Oregon follows the two men on a decades-long quest, bordering on obsession, into Oregon's drug and crime infested underbelly to answer one question: Who really killed Michael Francke?

Pod-Crashing Episode 41 Trusting Evolution

Pod-Crashing Episode 41: Trusting Evolution

Every singer songwriter I sit with, we end up getting locked in talk about how music never stops evolving.  None of the artists seem to be bothered by it.  It’s as if they expect change.  This might be the reason why so many fans of music enjoy listening to a live album.  The songs we love are there!  It’s just performed a little bit differently.
The reason why I bring this up is because so many Podcasters have a difficult time moving through evolution.  Great shows have totally disappeared off the map because the performers felt their episodes were moving in the wrong direction.
I get it. It’s an odd feeling that takes over.  Bringing the podcast to life feels like a job more than a connection to content.  Getting over that hurdle puts podcasters in a decision to “play out” a “timeout.”  That in itself can easily turn into “drop out.”
The evolution of your podcast is completely natural.  It’s one of the first things I cover when designing shows with businesses and solo performers.  I get to know their vision.  We discuss the highs and lows.  The time required not only to show prep and layout the tracks but to market the episodes on social media.
Being that close to a project puts you in the center of podcast fatigue.  The moment you try something new suddenly the censors are blaring like WWII air raid sirens.  In the beginning you’ve got the confidence to participate with change but when the numbers aren’t instantly showing up?  We revert to old habits.  Which puts weight on every reason why you’re podcasting.
It’s decision time.  Do you start an entirely different podcast or dump what feels like a bad taste.  We’ve make it too easy to locate free time.  Once you get that sweet surgery flavor in your creative system it becomes difficult to get back up on the horse.  In the early moments of podcast building you were able to push your way through invisible walls and stumbles.  Once you start getting the itch that something needs to evolve it’ll become that voice in the back of your head that won’t leave you alone.
The evolution of your podcast.  There has to be change!  Each episode is a new lesson learned.  Through experience you’re able to strengthen your vocal delivery or tone it down.  Through awareness a natural exchange begins to unfold.  Don’t ever stop giving yourself permission to screw up.
My podcast Unplugged and Totally Uncut is always under the microscope.  It’s nowhere near where it started.  I wanted to be Casery Kasum or Dick Clark and share the journey of the singer songwriters and performers. I wanted to take it to massive level of this is what we did to get here.  Then one day I asked myself, “Why are you doing what everybody else has already done?”
This is why I’d probably turn down a conversation with Paul McCartney.  What’s he going to say that hasn’t already been lived?  That oh wow moment.  Does Mr. McCartney still have it in him?  I keep practicing!  Cuz the day the phone call chimes in he’s gonna know we aren’t talking about The Beatles, Wings or global tours.
While lecturing on campuses I invite students to participate with the famous people interviews.  One rule. Don’t say anything about their past.  All thoughts and conversation are based on what is in the now.  I had to evolve to get there.  Then believe in why it would be this way.  A recent WTF moment was with legendary Rock drummer Deen Castronova talking about never becoming the front man of a band.  He’ll sing lead vocals all day and night but he’s not going up there where the people are.
Unplugged and Totally Uncut went through a huge change about a year ago when I began posting a show called Unplugged Addiction to Creativity.  I wanted to be real.  Like most people we’re all getting tired of reading about which person of fame elected to take their life.  The numbers are through the roof!  I’ll never stop asking why while doing everything in my creative power to write and produce features that put focus on what it’s really like to be overtaken by the creative beast.
The evolution of your podcast can include extensions.  I love what Jake Brennan is doing with his atmosphere. Disgraceland and Club 27 embrace the dark storytelling format of music’s unspoken history.  Each of the podcasts feed the other.  He uses the platform to cross pollinate other ventures he’s diving into at Double Elvis.
Lauren Bright Pachenco is the journalism force behind Murder In Oregon.  A series of episodes digging deep into murder, government corruption and more.  I asked her about life after this story is complete, would there be more unsolved Oregon murders?  She paused.  Then laughed.  And said she couldn’t dive into the future at this time.  My professional guess is yes.  I can’t wait to see how she evolves her skills as a storyteller and investigator into a giant web of continuations.
Podcasting isn’t terrestrial radio.  The one thing I took from the conversation between Bob Pittman of iHeart Media and Charlamagne Tha God is that it’s still an open platform for creative minds to explore.  Because I’m so far out of the tower signal loop I reached out to Bo Thompson of WBT Charlotte.  The kid has evolved into a master at designing and executing portraits of legendary Broadcast talent and more.  It’s totally got his signature all over it.  Is podcasting within the ranks of radio as free spirited as blogging was during its heyday?
In which direction will future podcast episodes grow now that Google has brought Audio SEO’s forward?  The question Kraus Group Marketing is asking Podcasts and S.E.R.P’s or SERP’s the next big thing?  Search Engine Result Pages.
SERPS are extremely important because it allows your fans and followers to get to know your website.  If you’re truly into podcasting because it’s gonna make you money, this is a priceless part of your podcast evolution.
So what’s the moral of the story?  Let your podcast presence go and grow.  Let it have a life of its own!  Somedays it may act like an out of control two year old child, a constantly demanding teenager or well-oiled seasoned middle aged expression of great content.
My podcast Poetic Elevation.  In the beginning it had to be one path with no way off.  I invited Southern Preachers to hang their messages and learned quickly how disconnected that thought was from how listeners want their podcasts.  The evolution of the episodes began to put focus on Biblical studies but with my voice.  They still wouldn’t have it.  My friend Denny wrote to me, “Everything you’re saying has already be shared a trillion times.  It’s nothing new.  If you’re truly into this approach put lifestyle ahead of all things.  You’re gonna have to get real.”
Play with your podcast.  See if it bites you back.  Pull on its history and see if it snaps.  Bring an approach you thought you’d never try.  Never stop taking chances. Evolve…

Deen Castronova

<a class="spreaker-player" href="https://www.spreaker.com/episode/22231027" data-resource="episode_id=22231027" data-width="100%" data-height="200px" data-theme="light" data-playlist="false" data-playlist-continuous="false" data-autoplay="false" data-live-autoplay="false" data-chapters-image="true" data-episode-image-position="right" data-hide-logo="false" data-hide-likes="false" data-hide-comments="false" data-hide-sharing="false" data-hide-download="true">Listen to "Drummer Deen Castronova Now With Revolution Saints Releases Rise" on Spreaker.</a><script async src="https://widget.spreaker.com/widgets.js"></script>

Deen Castronovo (The Dead Daisies, ex-Journey, Bad English), Doug Aldrich (The Dead Daisies, Burning Rain, ex-Whitesnake, DIO), and Jack Blades (Night Ranger), Revolution Saints have now completed their incredible third album, “Rise”. As with the first two well-received albums, Rev Saints (as the fans like to call them) are bringing back the classic melodic rock style that thrilled and delighted legions of fans in the ‘80s and ‘90s and still does today! Inspiring, uplifting vocals, soaring melodies, and musicianship to die for is what you get in spades here. Simply put, it is completely badass.

Superbly handling drums and lead vocals is the one and only Deen Castronovo. Already renowned for his drum talents and backing vocals in Journey, Bad English, and more, Deen's excellent vocal talents are once again receiving a well-deserved spotlight on this release. On bass, and co-lead vocals on a few tracks, Jack Blades is well known for his melodic, yet hard rocking approach to songwriting and playing via multiple classic albums by his main band Night Ranger, as well as with the Damn Yankees and the Shaw/Blades releases. On guitar, Doug Aldrich lends his fiery guitar attack to round out this dream-come-true melodic rock band. Doug, who left Whitesnake after a fruitful 12 year run (including co-writing 2010’s critically acclaimed "Forevermore" release) and also of Burning Rain and formerly of DIO, has a deep pedigree and is one of today’s most respected rock guitarists.

You can tell by the name - and the names involved - that REVOLUTION SAINTS is not going to be your average rock 'n roll band. The project is the vision of Frontiers' President Serafino Perugino, who for years had hoped to work on a project where Deen would be the lead vocalist. Having previously worked with all three artists on different projects on Frontiers, having Deen, Jack and Doug on board together was a dream come true for Perugino.

With production overseen by more and more in demand in-house Frontiers man, Alessandro Del Vecchio, the recording process took place in Milan and in Doug and Jack’s own studios in California and Seattle. Songwriting was handled by Del Vecchio, Aldrich, and Blades with contributions from fellow Frontiers recording artist Dan Rossall (of UK newcomers PASSION). Of special note, the poignant ballad “Eyes Of A Child” was penned by Jack Blades and Tommy Shaw.

REVOLUTION SAINTS' music is played with a heart, soul, and spirit that shines through in the music. These songs highlight the passion and enthusiasm of three of the best all-around rock ‘n roll musicians in the game today.

In PLEASED TO MEET ME: Genes, Germs, and the Curious Forces That Make Us Who We Are (published by National Geographic) research scientist Bill Sullivan offers a groundbreaking new window into how genetics, epigenetics and microbes work with our environment to make us who we are. Sullivan, a professor of pharmacology and microbiology at Indiana University School of Medicine, draws on cutting-edge research to illuminate how our genes not only dictate our physical traits but can also have an enormous influence on our personality and behavior.

With wit and humor, Sullivan deconstructs provocative studies suggesting that certain genes influence whether someone is a liberal or conservative, violent or timid, lean or obese. But genetic makeup, he explains, is only part of the picture. Through a process called epigenetics, the environment can actually modify our DNA, which may explain how the behavior of our parents — for example, our mother’s behavior during pregnancy or whether our father was a smoker — can play a wide-ranging role in obesity, depression, anxiety and more.

Sullivan also examines recent studies regarding how our microbiota — the trillions of microbes living inside our gut — can affect our behavior and mood. The book draws from the latest psychology research to reveal why and how our brain can trick us into performing irrational behaviors or actions detrimental to our well-being and society. It also explains why people with opposing points of view struggle to convince one another to change their minds.

The marketplace is littered with scores of books that offer advice on how to overcome obstacles and reach your goals, but every one of them fails to touch on the most important aspect of making this a reality - DISCIPLINE. In DISCIPLINE EQUALS FREEDOM, Jocko begins with how to mentally prepare yourself to succeed. He follows with the actions necessary to implement your game plan. In the early years of 1960, five working class lads from Tottenham-North London came together, forming The Dave Clark Five (The DC5) - a group that would not only change but unapologetically shape the course of popular music forever and sell over one hundred million records along the way. Founded by one of the UK’s most prolific and celebrated musicians, songwriters and producers Dave Clark, the band spearheaded the British invasion of the US, becoming the first UK band to tour there and scoring an unprecedented fifteen consecutive Top Twenty hits, more than any other act bar The Beatles.
Marking 60 years since the band formed, ‘ALL THE HITS’ is a definitive collection of their greatest hits, exquisitely remastered by Dave Clark at the world-famous Abbey Road Studios and available on vinyl for the first time in over 40 years.  Released on BMG on January 24, 2020, ‘ALL THE HITS’  perfectly showcases how The DC5 took the world by storm and helped change the rock scene, blasting hit after hit over the world’s radio airwaves.
Dave Clark’s beautifully remastered album will feature 28 tracks spanning over half a century of the band’s history, including their first number one hit ‘Glad All Over’, which famously knocked The Beatles off the UK's No.1 spot in 1964 and sold over two-and-a-half million records, followed by “Bits And Pieces” which repeated the success; a seemingly impossible feat of a semi-professional outfit, without an agent or manager. Both hits perfectly showcased The DC5’s style of sound, a unique brand of pop, weighed by the feet-stomping drums of Dave Clark and the power of Mike Smith’s vocals. Other hits include their multi-million selling record “Do You Love Me” and “Catch Us If You Can”.
“It’s a trip for me to go back to vinyl. The 60s revisited. This album covers our hits from around the world on both CD and magical vinyl,” says Dave Clark. “We hope you enjoy this blast from the past.”
After appearing a record-breaking 18 times on America’s iconic “Ed Sullivan Show”, which had a weekly audience of 70 million, The DC5 fleetly notched up a record-breaking 15 consecutive Top 20 U.S. hit singles within a two-year period, and sold over 100 million records worldwide.
The DC5 catalogue of recordings has been one of the most sought after collections in rock history having been off the market for over a decade.

We live in an age when billionaires are betting their fortunes on laboratory advances to prove aging unnecessary and death a disease that can be cured. Researchers are delving into the mysteries of stem cells and the human genome, discovering what it means to grow old and how to keep those processes from happening. This isn't science fiction; it's real, it's serious, and it's on track to revolutionize our definitions of life and mortality.

In IMMORTALITY, INC, science author, National Geographic Explorer and former CNN-Bureau Chief Chip Walter investigates the scientific pursuit of immortality, gaining exclusive and unprecedented access to the Silicon Valley billionaires shaping (and funding) this quest.   Walter’s exploration of the science, business and culture behind “solving death” weaves a riveting and engaging vision of some of the world’s most important thinkers and scientists molecular biologist and Apple chairman Arthur Levinson; human genomics trailblazer Craig Venter; futurist Ray Kurzweil, biomedical gerontologist Aubrey de Grey, and stem cell pioneer Robert Hariri to tell the story of how science is working to solve one of the greatest mysteries the human race faces: aging.

A FAREWELL TO KINGS initially came together out of a RUSH celebration event of the same name that drummer Brian Tichy organized at the NAMM show in 2017. This included Francesco DiCosmo on bass and vocals, Walter Ino on guitar and Jonathan Sindelman on keys.

Acting as the house band in the event which celebrated four decades of RUSH’s music, it featured many all-star drummers, guitarists, vocalists and bassists proving to be a momentous, inspiring occasion!

After this, AFTK would play gigs when their schedules aligned.

En route to one gig in 2019, Tichy said to the other guys, “What if we wrote our own song in the spirit of Rush and named it “Huck Finn”! (as a tip of the hat to “Tom Sawyer”, Rush’s most famous song.)
This was half a joke that soon became a concrete idea with the potential to offer something truly unique for Rush fans, by Rush fans, and that would serve to challenge AFTK on an entirely different level!

The initial writing session & recording was ambitious, fast-paced, and almost effortless. They also filmed an in-studio video for “Huck Finn”.

AFTK agreed to write and record more songs with the idea of completing an EP, but scheduled conflicts got in the way and the project was put on hold.

Then, this year, on January 10th, the shocking news spread around the world of the passing of iconic Rush drummer/ lyricist Neil Peart. Deeply affected by this, the guys agreed they should release “Huck Finn” as a tribute to all the decades of influence Neil has on AFTK, not to mention the impact he's had on the world of drumming, countless musicians, lyricists, writers, fans, and rock music in general!

From AFTK:
“We are all deeply affected by the passing of Neil Peart, in fact so much so that we feel the timing is right to release “Huck Finn”.  Written and recorded over a year ago, it shows how much Neil and the band mean to us!  There has never been and never will be another Rush, and certainly no other artist like Neil Peart!  The world is not the same without “the Professor on the drum kit”!!!   He will be sorely missed and remembered as one of the world’s greatest!

Drummer Brian Tichy says, “It was clear that after the novelty of writing HUCK FINN wore off, we had a song we felt represented how much of an impact Rush had on us. Their influence has been constant in my life since I was 12 years old and Neil instantly became one of my top 3 favorite drummers of all time!
RIP Neil Peart!”

Bassist and singer, Francesco DiCosmo commented, “ “The inspiration of celebrating 40 years of RUSH’s amazing music as a tribute was a truly awesome experience, and even more poignant now that Neil has very sadly, passed away. We feel the need to get Huck Finn out to the world as a truly heartfelt tribute to Neil Peart and Geddy & Alex as well, and to show the gratitude of the life changing Music they have given us. The natural progression for AFTK to write an EP of adventurous music I hope will be our direction. Im sure we’ll write music that’s exciting and engaging for us so I'm sure it will be for others as well and to keep this amazing style of music alive. I’m looking forward to writing & recording more music with these great players, as testament and gratitude to Neil Peart and Rush.”

Guitarist Walter Ino stated, “I remember hearing ‘Exit Stage Left’ for the first time when I was 14 years old, right when I started playing guitar. I was an immediate fan! I memorized that whole record from beginning to end, including every single hit of Neil’s drum solo on YYZ! Playing with AFTK brings me back to why I started playing music to begin with. Our first attempt at writing as a group all started from an old guitar riff that I had sitting around for years, which turned into our song “Huck Finn”.  I’m so proud of what we came up with collectively! We really wanted to honor Rush and show how much they influenced us as artists and players. And now, with the passing of Neil, the heartbeat of Rush, we felt it was important for our fans to see how much they meant to us.”

Keyboardist Jonathan Sindelman says, "The personal, artistic, and cultural impact RUSH has made is well beyond quantifiable.  Apart from the artistic merit and accomplishments of each individual, the bonds these guys forged through music and friendship left a lasting impression on me from the time I was 12 years old.  In light of Neil's passing, I would say that to me he's always been the voice of reason in rock music, and for songwriting in general.  The legacy Neil led and now leaves behind, through his musicianship, lyrics and novels, will continue to be regarded and revered as something inherently good in the world.  And a huge thanks to the guys in AFTK for the honorable work and standard of excellence that is the band, and for our collaboration on HUCK FINN -- Simply the good stuff, and a wonderful gift back to Rush fans!"

Ada Calhoun

<a class="spreaker-player" href="https://www.spreaker.com/episode/22119232" data-resource="episode_id=22119232" data-width="100%" data-height="200px" data-theme="light" data-playlist="false" data-playlist-continuous="false" data-autoplay="false" data-live-autoplay="false" data-chapters-image="true" data-episode-image-position="right" data-hide-logo="false" data-hide-likes="false" data-hide-comments="false" data-hide-sharing="false" data-hide-download="true">Listen to "Ada Calhoun Releases The Book Why We Can&#39;t Sleep" on Spreaker.</a><script async src="https://widget.spreaker.com/widgets.js"></script>

WHY WE CAN’T SLEEP (Grove Hardcover) began as  award-winning journalist and best-selling memoirist Ada Calhoun’s attempt to discover for herself why, at 40, despite having achieved many of the outward markers of success and personal fulfillment, she felt lousy!!
In her search for answers, Calhoun embarked on the project that eventually became the groundbreaking and deftly researched WHY WE CAN’T SLEEP. In the process, she consulted with generational research and data experts and interviewed hundreds of middle-class, Generation X American women. The biggest discovery Calhoun made along the way was that she wasn’t alone.
Moreover, she found that many of the pervasive struggles felt by women her age—with money, relationships, work, and existential despair—were unique to Gen X women. She investigated housing costs, workplace trends, credit card debt averages, and divorce data and at every turn, Calhoun recognized familiar patterns.
Speaking with a diverse array of hundreds of women across America—single and partnered, mothers and childless, black, white, Asian, Latina, gay, straight, liberal, conservative, evangelical and atheist—Calhoun found that this generation of women raised to “have it all” were and are, by and large, exhausted, anxious, terrified about money, under-employed, overwhelmed, and in doubt of many of the major life choices they had already made.
Instead of being heard, these women have been told their issues don’t qualify as a true crisis—that they should file their feelings under the hashtag #FirstWorldProblems, and instead of complaining, to lean in, take “me time,” or make a chore chart to get their lives and homes in order.
As Calhoun herself noted in “The New Midlife Crisis: Why (and How) it’s Hitting Gen X Women,” her October 2017 Oprah.com article that went viral and evolved into WHY WE CAN’T SLEEP,  “The flood of advice can send the message that if you're unhappy, it's your own fault.”
The research compiled in WHY WE CAN’T SLEEP says otherwise. The more she investigated, the more Calhoun discovered that Gen X women have long been subject to major historic, socioeconomic forces that limited their adult prospects and offered few to no support systems, even as expectations for their success in life remained sky high in comparison to previous generations of women. In middle age, the contradictions and chasms between what their lives were supposed to look like if they “did everything right” and the way they are actually living have come home to roost for Gen X women—and it’s making them sleepless and miserable.
That sounds like a grim prognosis, but Calhoun assures readers “there is cause for hope,” suggesting that the “way out of the crisis” is by shattering the “having it all” myth, illuminating the unique cultural challenges facing Gen X women, and in doing so, “facing up to our lives as they really are.”
WHY WE CAN’T SLEEP doesn’t stop at shedding light on these problems; it also offers solutions for how to emerge from the abyss―and keep the next generation of women from falling into it. Ada surmises that Gen X women should reframe the story of their lives and mistakes and learn to see themselves as “heroines worth rooting for.” This book is reassuring, empowering, and essential reading for all middle-aged women, and anyone who hopes to understand them.

Pod-Crashing Episode 40: Podcast Listening

I’m embarrassed to admit it.  My early days of being on the digital platform didn’t include physically listening to podcasting.  I’d say it was too much terrestrial radio confidence combined with a personal drive to not want to sound like somebody else.  I literally feared being influenced by others.

Saying that must mean I had to deal with this issue before.  My on the air radio approach.  I was so addicted to listening to radio air checks from around the nation that I started impersonating those who had made it to the largest cities.  I didn’t steal their act.  I’d study their approach, pace, volume and inflection.

I honestly wanted to give podcasting a good try by breaking into it unshaped.

And that I did. Wow!  Those opening episodes.  It doesn’t matter how many years of radio you’ve put in, podcasting is a different beast.  Here’s how I see it.  Radio plays well in a crowded room while podcasting is every bit one on one.

Being on the air required an energetic approach. I was talking over song intros and going into commercial breaks.  You know happy happy let me pick you up!  In the beginning that’s how I treated most of my podcasts.  I kept telling myself, “People know you for the energy.  I can’t sound boring.”  My interviews and one on one lifestyle features sounded like a Southern Preacher trying to push his voice into the hearts of anyone willing to listen.

Podcasting sounds better when there’s “less” and it’s directed more toward something.

I picked up on that after turning Howard Stern off.  I was disciplining myself to listen to podcasts from The Breakfast Club out of New York, Bobby Bones and Elvis Duran.  It’s all radio people not so much trying to pump up the jams.  It was real conversations and emotions.  Not that Stern isn’t.  I needed something to add to the daily diet.  Stern’s always been on in the car.  I needed something in the house.

You know, for those moments when the episode is done and now you have to socially connect it to listeners.  I hung up on listening to music replacing it with content driven by the masters of Broadcasting.

One problem.  The more I checked in the further I was from truly listening to podcasting.  Charlamagne, Bobby and Elvis were pretty much putting up their daily radio shows.  It was time to graduate toward Chelsea Handler, Marc Maron and Joe Rogan.  Extremely long episodes that acted like two opposite ends of a magnet pushing everything back.  I didn’t have an hour or more to listen to podcasting.

That’s where I had to condition myself.  Like real listeners do.  Train yourself that take in a little bit at a time.  You don’t have to hear the entire Conan O’Brien presentation in one sitting.  You’ve heard of graze eating.  It was time to grave listen.

The only reason why I bring this up is solely based on my four most recent podcast lectures.  Everybody was so excited to get into the rooms.  To do nothing more than talk about nothing.  I mean it was so inside that nobody outside the speakers could relate with any of their subjects.

I finally had to ask, “Have any of you made podcast listening your daily creative work out?”  Two.  As much as I want to accuse even Oprah Winfrey for rambling on with Tina Fey, Lady Gaga and others.  The talk show queen knows every question evolves into a benefit for the listener.

The Planner. The Performer.  The Producer.  The Promotor.  All four of these personalities need to be fed a river of hope and success.

I get it.  Podcasting is about cutting up and having fun.  It’s about getting the chance to cuss and keep professional wrestling fans connected to a new age of staying close with other lovers of the sport.  I’m not here to judge your content.

When 98% of those at the four lectures admitted that they didn’t listen to podcasting that pretty much said, “Give me the microphone Seymour.  I’m hungry!”  Only to hear them ask, “How long will it take to start making money?”

The Planner. The Performer.  The Producer.  The Promotor.

The Planner is the show prep master.  You don’t have write out every word.  Just have a plan and respect what’s been planned.  The Performer can easily get off track.  It’s completely human.  Refocus.  If you liked where you were going while jumping off the path, write it down for a future podcast.

The Performer needs to have a vision and shape.  That’s because the Producer has to make sense out of all that’s been delivered.  Editing is a huge strength.  As a Producer I’ll rip stuff out of the conversation that’s totally a waste of a listener’s time.  My good friend Michael did an 80 minute interview with a local preacher about the hard to locate answers from the Bible.  The day it was posted all but 15 minutes of it made it to the listener’s ears.  The preacher called me.  He felt like a lot of his time had been wasted.  My only reply was a lack of great content doesn’t win.

The Planner creates the map.  The Performer brings life to it.  The Producer keeps what’s alive pushing forward.  Then the Promoters hits social media.

If the episode earns you few listeners or a major league hit of many thumbs down.  Who do you think’s gonna catch a slap on the wrist?  All of them.  Communication is everything.  The Producer should always keep in contact with the Planner so that he or she knows of the where it should be going.

Meetings are a great start.  Everybody’s on the same page.  Then let’s get busy.

So what’s the moral of the story?  Nearly 100% of all podcasts don’t have four people playing out the role of The Planner. The Performer.  The Producer.  The Promotor.  Those hosting the episodes have to wear every hat.  Be honest with your podcast.  If it’s stumbling and rough on the edges do something about it.  We live in the digital age.  Everything should be nearly next to perfect.  What kind of message does it send out to potential advertisers if it sounds out of rhythm and nobody in tune?

From the author of the celebrated classic Louder Than Hell comes an oral history of the badass Heavy Metal lifestyle―the debauchery, demolition, and headbanging dedication―featuring metalhead musicians from Black Sabbath and Judas Priest to Twisted Sister and Quiet Riot to Disturbed, Megadeth, Throwdown and more.
In his song "You Can't Kill Rock and Roll" Ozzy Osbourne sings, "Rock and roll is my religion and my law." This is the mantra of the metal legends who populate Raising Hell―artists from Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Slipknot, Slayer, and Lamb of God to Twisted Sister, Quiet Riot, Disturbed, Megadeth, and many more! It's also the guiding principle for underground voices like Misery Index, Gorgoroth, Municipal Waste, and Throwdown.
Through the decades, the metal scene has been populated by colorful individuals who have thwarted convention and lived by their own rules. For many, vice has been virtue, and the opportunity to record albums and tour has been an invitation to push boundaries and blow the lid off a Pandora's box of riotous experiences: thievery, vandalism, hedonism, the occult, stage mishaps, mosh pit atrocities, and general insanity.
To the figures in this book, metal is a means of banding together to stick a big middle finger to a society that had already decided they didn't belong. Whether they were oddballs who didn't fit in or angry kids from troubled backgrounds, metal gave them a sense of identity.
Drawing from 150-plus first-hand interviews with vocalists, guitarists, bassists, keyboardists, and drummers, music journalist Jon Wiederhorn offers this collection of wild shenanigans from metal's heaviest and most iconic acts―the parties, the tours, the mosh pits, the rage, the joy, the sex, the drugs . . . the heavy metal life!
Horns up!
Throw back the backstage metal curtain and dig into the pit of larger-than-life rock 'n' roll escapades! Raising Hell does just that with tales from the chaotic, erotic, psychotic mania . . . revealed here in all its glory!"―Rob Halford, Judas Priest
"So you ever wanted to know what goes on behind the scenes, what made us who we are, what inspires us? Maybe you want to hear what we don't tell our significant others, you know, the dark secrets we touring musicians keep from home? John Wiederhorn collected so many great stories from all of your favorite rockers, I know my stories but reading about what everyone else went through is mind-blowing! Enjoy our lives!"―Billy Graziadei, founding member of Biohazard, Powerflo, and BillyBio
"Raising Hell is a Bible of Heavy Metal Debauchery! Not only did it bring back tons of crazy, fun touring memories for me, but it also made me laugh my ass off reading about the antics of my fellow metal heads! For anyone who's ever defecated where they shouldn't have, just to make their friends laugh, this book is for you! Hell, this book is for everyone! It rules!"―Richard Christy, Charred Walls of the Damned, ex-Death, ex-Iced Earth
"With Raising Hell, Jon Wiederhorn opens a treasure chest of outrageous, unflinching metal anecdotes that range from hysterical to terrifying to just plain disgusting. Each chapter is a new level of insanity!"―Scott Ian, Anthrax, S.O.D., The Damned Things

MAKE NOISE: A Creator's Guide to Podcasting and Great Audio Storytelling by Eric Nuzum (Hardcover; January 7, 2020) is the first book on the craft of audio storytelling from a true podcasting pioneer. A veteran of NPR and Audible, Nuzum has created and produced podcasts that routinely top the charts, appear in yearly “best of” lists, and win awards. Of the six billion podcast downloads each year, more than one billion of those are for the 130 podcasts Nuzum created, including the TED Radio Hour, Invisibilia, Where Should We Begin? with Esther Perel, and The Butterfly Effect.
Bringing all the wisdom, advice, practical information, and big-picture thinking that any individual or business needs to make a successful podcast, MAKE NOISE offers an analysis of the medium, examining its promise, its drawbacks, and how to bring it all together. Filled with a deep-yet-accessible dive into what works and why, it identifies core principles to help guide readers throughout the creative process.  And then it gets into how-tos—how to develop character, story, voice; and how to conduct an effective interview, with tips from Terry Gross and story-building ideas from Ira Glass.

Much in the way that Robert McKee’s book Story has become a must-read for any aspiring screenwriter, MAKE NOISE is poised to become the foundational text for podcasting—the dog-eared definitive guide for anyone who has something to say.
