We all have a lot to say.
How we use our words can lead us toward troubled waters. Mainly because most of those receiving don’t meet
your presence with acceptance.
Absolutely we live in the land of free speech and opportunity. We also live within the replenished soils
that make up cancel culture. Comedians
are having to change their live performances because of their words. A single person can say something about
Batman and totally irritate the lovers of bats around the world. How dare anyone think this nighttime flying
creation be connected to hunting down bad people. We are offended by such a connection. Ho hum.
It’s part of that group of people who kill millions of spiders every day
then use chemicals to fill the air because there are too many flying insects interrupting
the moments that which make up the day.
People and their words. Being
heard isn’t what captures my attention.
Silent introverts do! What are
you thinking? Where are you planting
your words? Quiet introverts are people
watchers, planners and careful about stepping outward. But do they have a lot to say? This is why I practice stream writing seven
days a week. One page. Ten minutes to write. No editing.
Let it all out. Look at your
words. Hear your voice without words
being spoken. What did you learn about
your point of direction? We all have
something to say. How are you using your
words? Musicians and songwriters get to
hide behind fancy poetry. Politicians
rely on shaming those who don’t believe while inciting fear so you will begin
to follow. Preachers rely on the
word. I’m a hidden speak writer. I say things that make people assume when in
reality the interpretation was completely out of focus of the original
idea. Getting to know your words opens
the door for you to believe in the spirit of being heard.

They all run together!
I’m not talking about the deer in my forest. The days of the week and the numbers they
carry with them. A herd of days. Or would it be a gaggle of moments? I never hear anyone getting excited about it
being Friday. Backyard BBQ’s are anytime
and anyplace just bring your own brand of beer.
The Covid lockdown erased the lines that separated the days of the
week. I have to look at my Google
calendar to remind myself that wow it really is a Friday! I feel like a Rock star that’s been on the
road for a billion days. They have no clue
where they are. Oh sure, slowing down
might lift the daily lines. Why stop
when getting ahead is the post Covid 19 adventure? I do and always have worked seven days a
week. I blame this lifestyle on my
parents. They pushed their lives into
overdrive until they couldn’t do it any more in their mid-80s. My Grandfather helped build the infamous
Bozeman tunnel that moves through the great Rocky Mountains. My father built our home in Billings,
Montana. I didn’t get a single one of
those genes. My fuel has always been
spirituality and the winds that carry the stories. Part of living in the Now is doing it right
Now. Setting things aside serves as a
seed for another day and quite possibly a different decade. When people ask me about my age I tell
them. Then it’s followed by, “I think.” The days.
They all run together.

An odd shape of thought has fallen into my heart while making
my way into the forest. So much of what
I’m seeing is a memory. I’m a writer
that claims to endlessly live in the present.
It’s difficult on days like this.
Being mindful of the present requires a reminder of how we got
here. The flowering trees bring color
and strong scent of spring. As hard as I’m
trying to push away the heart must remain in the present. Lost in a memory. The white blossoms on the ancient apple
tree. The budding leaves on the Leland Cyprus. I honestly can’t see beyond the memory. What does that say about hope and the
future? Has life being put on hold due
to the Covid lockdown changed my relationship with this forest? Being here is the moment. The quick chirps from the bright red
Cardinal. The tiny yellow finches
darting around. The Red Tail Hawk with
its screeching. And back I go into a
memory. Back to our first
introduction. 1992. I knew something was moving through me. See what I mean! All I can do today is live off a memory. The choice should always be to be present in
the everyday of new beginnings. Comedian/actor
JB Smoove knows his place in the present.
During his conversation with Howard Stern JB reminded the legendary
broadcaster how important it is to protect your legacy. What you do right now is how you’re going to
be remembered. If your choice is to be a
jerk or to gamble your paycheck away, that’s how you are going to be seen. People don’t care about your past because
present has the impact of where we are going tomorrow. How do you want to be seen? I was blessed to lead two 3.5 hour lectures
yesterday. Those in attendance saw me as
________. What would they say about my
new today? You have to pay
attention! Know your moment of now. It’s the ink in the writing instrument
designing what will become your legacy.

Robert Sykes. A
frequent visitor on my daily path. Until
yesterday he was always as the aged man who downed two huge Red Bulls before
shopping for groceries. I didn’t know
his story. Not til fate put me next to
him while manning the beer and wine bar at Harris Teeter. Robert Sykes wanted another glass of the
house juice. He wanted to know where I
was from, “You talk funny. People don’t
sound like you.” I learned while
choosing to listen that Robert Sykes had walked nearly the entire nation. Walked meaning he hitch hiked. That doesn’t always mean getting a ride. Nor does it always offer shelter. The worst storm he’s ever seen was in North
Dakota. He had to take shelter under an
overpass. Robert Sykes is a U.S.
Marine. He wanted Air Force but felt he’d
take whatever they’d give. 1968. His hero John Wayne would do it. So he needed to. Get over to Vietnam. In the moments he arrived, the platoon that
which he was part of was ambushed. They
lost six including their leader. Robert
Sykes remembers every man that was part of his team, including the cities they
were from. Robert Sykes found reason to
chuckle about a helicopter that almost landed on him while trying to free an
area under attack. Today, he finds
solitude sitting in the far corner of a grocery store beer and wine bar. Slowly sipping on the juice. When it was time to go. I called Yellow Cab. I watched as he struggled to get into the
vehicle. Not because of the wine. It was
the effects of time. I thanked Mr. Sykes for his stories. He quickly returned, “There’s a lot of us out
here that want to talk. We just can’t
find the listeners.”
